First, you share the vehicle: group joining departures fill a safari van or 4x4 with up to 7 travellers on the same itinerary, splitting the vehicle, fuel and guide cost. Second, you sleep outside the reserve gates: budget tented camps near Talek and Sekenani gates cost a fraction of lodges inside the reserve, yet you're minutes from the entrance for morning game drives. Third, you travel by road instead of flying from Wilson Airport.

What you don't give up: park entry to the same Maasai Mara National Reserve every luxury visitor drives, a professional driver-guide, full-board meals, and the same lion, elephant, cheetah and — in season — migration herds. The animals do not check your accommodation category.
