Skip the 5–6 hour drive. Take off from Nairobi's Wilson Airport, land on an airstrip inside the Mara ecosystem 45–60 minutes later, and be watching lions before lunch.
The mechanics are simple. Scheduled light aircraft leave Wilson Airport — Nairobi's domestic hub, about 30 minutes from the city centre — each morning and early afternoon for the string of airstrips inside the Mara ecosystem: Keekorok, Musiara and Ol Kiombo among them. The flight takes 45 to 60 minutes, and on a clear day the descent over the Rift Valley and onto the plains is a game drive in itself.
Your camp meets you at the airstrip. From there, everything runs on the camp's rhythm: a game drive on the way in if your flight lands in the morning, lunch, an afternoon drive, dinner under canvas. Game drives on fly-in packages use the camp's own shared 4x4s with resident guides — vehicles you share with a handful of other guests from the same camp, not a tour bus. Because those guides drive the same territory every day, they know where last night's kill is and which lugga the leopard favours.
The arithmetic that sells flying safaris is time. A road safari spends 10–12 hours of a 3-day trip on the Nairobi–Mara highway; a fly-in spends two. On a short itinerary, that's the difference between four game drives and seven.
Short stays. With only two or three days in Kenya, flying converts travel hours into game-drive hours. A 2-day fly-in delivers a genuine safari — four game drives — inside 36 hours.
Travellers connecting to international flights. Morning departures from the Mara land at Wilson by late morning, leaving a comfortable margin to cross the city to Jomo Kenyatta International for evening long-haul flights — no gambling on highway traffic after six hours on the road.
Anyone who'd rather not do the road trip. The drive to the Mara is long, and the final stretch is rough and dusty in the dry months. Travellers with back trouble, families with restless young children, and anyone prone to car-sickness tend to find the 50-minute flight worth every dollar. That said, if the Rift Valley drive appeals for the scenery, the one-way fly-drive combination below gives you both.
Light aircraft flying the Mara circuit enforce a limit of 15 kg per person, in soft-sided bags, hand luggage included. Hard-shell suitcases don't fit the aircraft's small holds and will be refused at check-in. This is less painful than it sounds: safari packing is shorts, layers and a fleece for dawn drives; most Nairobi hotels store your main luggage free until you return; and nearly every camp offers same-day laundry. A duffel bag and a small daypack for camera gear is the formula that works.
Day 1: morning flight from Wilson Airport; your camp's 4x4 meets the aircraft and game drives en route to camp. Lunch, siesta, and a full afternoon drive until sundown. Day 2: dawn game drive when the cats are moving, big breakfast back at camp, and a final drive to the airstrip for the flight back to Wilson — landing before the afternoon rush.

Day 2: the day the extra night buys you — a full day on the plains with a picnic lunch, or split morning and afternoon drives with a midday rest. Optional sunrise balloon safari (~$450, booked ahead). In migration season (July–October), this is your river-crossing day.
