The Honest Truth About Coast-to-Mara Travel
Kenya's two headline attractions — the Indian Ocean beaches and the Maasai Mara — sit at opposite ends of the country, and plenty of operators gloss over what that means in practice. Let us not: driving from Mombasa to the Mara takes well over 10 hours each way. On a 3-day package that would mean spending two of your three days staring at tarmac, arriving exhausted, and seeing less wildlife than a Nairobi day-tripper. We don't sell that itinerary, and we'd caution you against anyone who does.
The good news is that the two realistic routes are both excellent. You can fly direct from Mombasa or Ukunda (Diani) to the Mara's airstrips in roughly 2–2.5 hours including stops — a scenic hop that turns a punishing transfer into part of the holiday. Or, if the budget is tighter, you can ride the SGR Madaraka Express train to Nairobi in about 5–6 hours and join a road safari from there, cutting the cost by more than half in exchange for an extra travel day each way.
Moi International Airport serves Mombasa, while Ukunda Airstrip is closer to Diani Beach resorts.
Malindi Airport can suit northern-coast stays when seasonal schedules align.
Watamu transfers may route through Malindi or Mombasa depending on flight availability.
Exact coast schedules change seasonally, so quotations use confirmed operating dates.

Direct coast–Mara flights operate seasonally, with the fullest schedules during the July–October migration. When directs aren't flying, the Wilson connection covers the same ground with one change of aircraft.
Direct flights minimise transfers but carry limited seats and strict baggage allowances.
The SGR option requires more time but substantially lowers the transport cost.
Wilson connections work when coastal services and camp airstrips lack a direct pairing.
Open-jaw tickets can finish in Nairobi instead of returning to the beach.
Travellers continuing internationally can fly from the Mara to Wilson Airport, then transfer by road to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for their onward flight.
Sample Three-Day Fly-In Itinerary
Day 1
Coast → Masai Mara · Afternoon Game Drive
A morning transfer from your beach hotel to Mombasa's Moi International or Ukunda's Diani airstrip, then the light-aircraft flight west — roughly 2–2.5 hours including en-route stops. A camp vehicle meets you at the Mara airstrip, and the drive to camp doubles as your first game drive. Lunch, a short rest, then out again at around 4:00 pm as the heat eases. Dinner and overnight at your camp.
Day 2
Full Day in the Reserve
A dawn start when the big cats are still moving, then a full day of game drives with a picnic lunch out on the plains. Between July and October your guide positions near the Mara River for a chance at a wildebeest crossing. Optional balloon safari at sunrise (~$450, booked ahead). Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 3
Morning Game Drive → Fly Back
A final early game drive and breakfast at camp before your flight out — back to the coast to finish the beach holiday, or on to Nairobi Wilson if you're heading home. The open-jaw routing (in from the coast, out to Nairobi) is popular for end-of-trip departures.
Flights may make intermediate airstrip stops to collect or drop other passengers.
Camp staff meet the aircraft and manage the final transfer across reserve tracks.
Keekorok, Musiara and Ol Kiombo are among the airstrips used by Mara properties.
Wildlife sightings remain natural; migration crossings cannot be guaranteed for specific dates.

Planning Notes for Coast-Based Travellers
Book flights early for migration season. July to October is when everyone wants the direct coast–Mara flight, and light aircraft carry only a handful of passengers. Seats and camps both sell out weeks ahead — lock in the safari leg before you finalise beach hotel dates if you can.
Beach-and-bush is the classic Kenya combination for good reason. A week on the sand in Diani or Watamu bracketing three days in the Mara gives you two completely different holidays in one country, and the flight connections exist precisely because so many travellers do it. Ordering matters less than people think, though ending on the beach lets you unwind after the early safari mornings.
Watamu and Malindi travellers connect through the same system — transfers to Mombasa or Malindi's airstrip are straightforward, and we fold them into the quote. Diani guests are best placed of all: Ukunda airstrip is minutes from most south-coast hotels.
Pack light for the aircraft. The 15 kg soft-bag limit is enforced. Leave your main suitcase in the beach hotel's storage, carry neutral-coloured layers (Mara mornings are surprisingly cool at altitude), and keep camera gear in your hand luggage.
Confirm hotel storage before departure if the itinerary returns to the same resort.
SGR passengers should allow transfer time between Nairobi Terminus and their hotel.
Comprehensive insurance should cover medical care, cancellation and baggage disruption.
Neutral layers suit cool dawn drives, while sun protection and binoculars remain useful throughout the day on the open plains.
Coast Departure Questions
Can I drive from Mombasa to the Masai Mara?
We honestly advise against it. The road journey is well over 10 hours each way, so a 3-day safari would spend two of its three days in a vehicle before you ever reach the reserve. Flying direct (about 2–2.5 hours) or taking the SGR to Nairobi and joining a road safari are both faster, safer and better value.
How does the SGR option work, step by step?
Board the Madaraka Express at Mombasa Terminus and reach Nairobi in about 5–6 hours, ideally the day before your safari. We arrange your Nairobi hotel transfer, and next morning the safari collects you between 7:00 and 8:00 am for the 5–6 hour drive to the Mara. Afterwards you return by road to Nairobi and take the train or a flight back to the coast.
Can I fly in from the coast and out to somewhere different?
Yes — open-jaw routings are common. Many travellers fly from the coast into the Mara, then out to Nairobi Wilson to connect with an international flight from Jomo Kenyatta, ending the beach-and-bush trip without backtracking. Tell us your onward plans and we build the routing into the quote.
Is the direct coast–Mara flight year-round?
Direct flights between Mombasa/Ukunda-Diani and the Mara operate seasonally, with frequency at its best during the July–October migration. Outside peak months some departures route via Nairobi Wilson instead. We confirm the exact routing and schedule for your dates at booking.
What luggage can I bring on the light aircraft?
About 15 kg per passenger in soft-sided bags — hard suitcases don't fit the hold. Most beach hotels store your main luggage while you're on safari, so pack a small duffel with safari clothing and collect the rest when you return to the coast.
